After searching the Alltel site today for Cell Phone, Ringtone and Mobile Network information i noticed there was basically nothing about the company itself. Considering we can deliver Alltel Ringtones to Cellphones i thought i would make some phone calls to get more information about the Alltel company.
So, who is Alltel exactly?
Alltel is Americas fifth largest wireless provider with more than 13 Million customers, ranked behind T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless, AT&T and Sprint aka Nextel. They have their own network (not rented off others) in 34 states but cover 50 states and surprisingly their coverage is the largest in the US in area, so if your looking for a carrier with big coverage Alltel is it. They have deals with Verizon Wireless and Sprint Nextel and mooch some infrastructure which is why their coverage is so large.
To help Alltel’s growth over the years they have snapped up a few other companies such as, 360 Communications based in Illinois which gained them 2.6 Million customers, Aliant Communications which was a 1.8 Billion dollar deal, Verizon Kentucky a 1.9 Billion dollar deal, CenturyTel at 1.5 Billion, Palmetto MobileNet which gained them 2.3 Million customers and Midwest Wireless for 1.083 Billion to name a few.
Then in 2007 Alltel agreed to be acquired by TPG Capital and the equity division of Goldman Sachs Group for $27.5 billion.
Now the clincher Verizon Wireless thought Alltel looked pretty good agrees to buy Alltel for a cool $28.1 Billion Dollars. The merger is set to be done by the end of 2008.
So there you have it, the rise and fall of Alltel as we know it. I’m not sure if Verizon will continue to run Alltel under the same company name or absorb it in to the Verizon Wireless brand.
